Background Heparan sulfate is a sulfated polysaccharide that is found on the surface of most cells as part of proteoglycans. Heparan sulfate is also present in the extracellular matrix. The polysaccharide mediates the interactions between a number of different proteins.
Both heparin and heparan sulfate are composed of alternating sequences of glucosamine and uronic acid with heparin being the more heavily sulfated polymer (Gallagher & Walker, 1985).
